19 Apr Grand Haven Pier Catwalk Installation April 2019 Update
It looks like most of the resurfacing of the Grand Haven Pier is complete as of April 2019. Everyone seems to agree that the new smooth surface is a great improvement from the bumpy concrete sections that were installed over 100 years ago. It’s only natural that the pier lovers (including myself), are asking “what about the catwalk and the lights?”
Reports are swirling around town much like the leaves on Harbor Avenue in November, that work will begin in May 2019 on the far end of the pier near the lighthouse. The spring and early summer is a good time for work on the lake as this is typically the time of year for smaller waves. The project is estimated to be completed by early August around the Coast Guard Festival and what I like to call “the beginning of surf season” here in Grand Haven. The decision to work at the end of the pier in May is sound because the chances of significant waves are relatively low based upon the physics and historical records in this area.
This project has been followed with significant interest by both residents and visitors because the pier is known to be an iconic landmark on the waterfront. In addition, who doesn’t like to take a stroll out on the pier on a calm and steamy day to cool off against the gentle winds of Lake Michigan. Of course, many a surfer will admit their gratitude to have a smooth surface to facilitate access to the better waves of the lake without all that paddling. Some have said that Grand Haven may be “the freshwater capital of surfing in the USA!” With the catwalk lights it has provided a little lighter backdrop to extend a surf session well into dusk. The actual date of the lights “relighting” is unknown. But I know that when that early evening moment arrives, it will be a magical moment in this town.
