14 Nov Grand Haven Pier
I had heard that the catwalk was going to take into 2018 for completion and that the Grand Haven south pier was a bit behind schedule because of high water and waves. However, I was very happy to learn that the pier was open for traffic on Sunday October 8th, 2017. The fact that nice waves were rolling in along the pier, and we had 68-degree water, were two more reasons to celebrate.
It had been more than a year since I was able to get back on the pier and excited to see what it looked like after the work resurfacing and strengthening of our surf walkway. I was amazed to see how well the Corps of Engineers transformed the crumbling and bumpy structure into a smooth sidewalk out into Lake Michigan. Particularly impressive was the level of detail observed with putting a subtle texture on the incline about 100 yards out from the base of the pier. Also, the ladders were still intact, and the dimensions of this iconic landmark remained the same.
Our community has come together and done a great job in keeping the history alive in Grand Haven. Last count, we had reached about 85% of our $1,000,000 goal for restoring the Catwalk. It appears that the surface beyond the inner light still needs to be finished before the Catwalk installation next year. However, if the first half results are any indication, it looks like we will have a new pier, catwalk and lights to celebrate next Thanksgiving 2018.
